Help Scout is a shared inbox for a support team, priced per user, with AI resolutions sold per resolution. Answer HQ isn't a shared inbox. It's the layer that answers repeat questions on your site so they never become inbox threads, at a flat $199 or $299 a month. Pick Help Scout if several people need to work one queue together.
Read that dividing line carefully, because it's the whole comparison. Help Scout's pricing page, checked August 29, 2026, lists Standard at $25 per user a month, Plus at $45 and Pro at $75, with AI Answers as an add-on at $0.75 per resolution and a free plan capped at 5 users, one inbox and one Docs site. Every person you add costs more, and every question the AI resolves costs more. Answer HQ charges neither: flat rate, not per agent, with 1,000 AI answers a month on Basic at $199 and 5,000 on Pro at $299. What Answer HQ gives up for that is the inbox itself.
What Answer HQ does not have
I'd rather lead with this than bury it. There's no shared inbox, no agent seats, no queue, no round-robin routing, no SLA policies, no workflow builder, no macros, no CSAT surveys, and no live chat with a human agent. There's also no SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram or phone channel, and no mobile app.
When the assistant can't answer, the customer fills in a contact form inside the conversation and it arrives in Tickets, which threads by email and is on every plan. That's the handoff. It works well when a small number of people handle the leftovers out of email. It doesn't replace a team of five collaborating on a queue with internal notes and assignment.
So who should stay on a shared inbox?
Stay with Help Scout, or any inbox tool, if any of these are true:
- Two or more people need to see, claim and hand off the same conversation without stepping on each other.
- You need SLA policies, routing rules or workflows to hit a response-time commitment.
- Support conversations arrive across several channels and you need them in one place.
- You need HIPAA compliance or SSO, which Help Scout lists on its Pro plan. Answer HQ makes no SOC 2 or HIPAA claim and offers no self-hosted deployment.
None of that is a knock on either product. It's a question of whether your problem is coordinating humans or reducing the number of conversations that need one.
How much of your volume is actually repeat questions?
For most small businesses I've worked with, most of it. Shipping times, returns, pricing, does it work with X, how do I reset this, what are your hours.
That's the volume Answer HQ takes. You point it at your website and upload your documents, it crawls them into a private Knowledge Vault, and the widget answers from that content with Quick Citations linking back to the exact page. Retrieval is two-stage, vector search then a reranker. Re-imports keep it current: monthly on Basic, weekly on Pro, every three days on Growth. Page limits are 100, 500 and 1,500 respectively, and that's usually the number that decides your plan rather than the answer count. Details are on the pricing page.
Install is one script tag. On Shopify it's an app from the App Store with a theme app embed, no theme code editing, and billing appears on your Shopify invoice.
Docs versus Articles: the help center comparison
Help Scout's Docs sites are good, and the free plan includes one. Answer HQ's Articles cover similar ground with one difference worth knowing: the articles are simultaneously your public help center, the content the AI answers from, and the Help tab inside the chat widget, where customers browse categories and search without leaving the page. That tab appears once you publish an article and can be switched off.
Three visibility settings make it more useful than it sounds. Published articles get used in answers, cited and shown publicly. Assistant only articles inform answers but are never cited and have no public page, which is where internal policy and phrasing guidance belongs. Drafts are invisible. Everything exports to Markdown in one click.
Where the AI cost comparison lands
Per-resolution pricing is honest, and at low volume it's cheap. It just doesn't reward success. The better your help content gets, the more questions AI resolves, and the higher your bill goes. At $0.75 a resolution, 1,000 resolved questions in a month is $750 on top of your per-user fees.
The same 1,000 AI answers on Answer HQ Basic is $199 total, and 5,000 on Pro is $299. Yearly billing knocks off two months. That's the argument in one line, and it's why I priced it flat.
Finding out what your docs are missing
Reducing volume only works if you know what to write. On Pro and Growth, Insights groups incoming questions into Topics by meaning rather than keyword match, works across languages including Chinese, Japanese and Korean, and ranks knowledge gaps: real questions your content failed to answer. From a gap you can start an article with the title, category and the customer's actual questions pre-filled, and saving it marks the topic resolved.
Autopilot, also Pro and Growth, is a dashboard agent you talk to about your own support data, and it can take actions for you. Anything risky, like publishing an article or re-importing your site, waits for your explicit approval.
The Breather deflected over 1,200 tickets in their first 30 days and saw inbound volume drop nearly 40% across email and phone, and their marketing manager credited the analytics with showing content gaps they'd never have spotted. The full story is in how The Breather deflects 1,200 support tickets.
FAQ
Can Answer HQ replace Help Scout entirely?
Only if your inbox is one or two people handling leftovers. Answer HQ has no shared inbox, so a team that works a queue together should keep one. The realistic setup is Answer HQ answering first on your site, with what's left threading through Tickets or into the inbox you already have.
Does Answer HQ charge per user?
No. Every plan includes a team workspace with no per-agent or per-seat charge. Plans differ on AI answers per month, knowledge pages and re-import frequency, not on headcount.
How much is Help Scout in 2026?
As of August 29, 2026 the listed prices are $25, $45 and $75 per user a month for Standard, Plus and Pro, with AI Answers at $0.75 per resolution and a free plan for 5 users, one inbox and one Docs site. Annual billing is discounted. Verify on their pricing page, since these move.
Is there a free Answer HQ plan?
No, only a 14-day free trial on Basic and Pro. Growth starts with a demo. If a permanently free tier is a hard requirement, Help Scout's free plan is the better fit and I'd rather say so than waste your trial.
What happens to a question the AI can't answer?
The customer gets a contact form in the same conversation, and the message lands in Tickets, which threads by email on every plan. You reply from there. The question also shows up in Insights as a knowledge gap on Pro and Growth, so you can write the article that stops it recurring.
