Intercom charges per seat and again per Fin resolution, on top of a full support platform with inbox, workflows and multiple channels. Answer HQ is the alternative if you want AI answers from your own content at a flat $199 or $299 a month with no seat or per-outcome fee. Intercom is the better buy for a staffed support team.
Two meters are what make Intercom expensive for small companies. Its pricing page, checked August 29, 2026, lists Essential at $29 per seat a month, Advanced at $85 and Expert at $132, each with Fin AI Agent charged from $0.99 per outcome, and email campaigns, SMS, WhatsApp and phone billed pay-as-you-go on top. So a good month for your AI is a bigger invoice. Answer HQ has a single number: $199 for 1,000 AI answers a month, $299 for 5,000, unlimited on Growth, team workspace included, no per-agent charge. At 1,000 resolved questions the per-outcome model alone is roughly $990 before seats.
The cost of success problem
Per-resolution pricing sounds fair, and in a sense it is. You pay when the thing works.
The catch shows up once you get good at it. You write better help articles, the AI resolves more, and your bill rises in proportion. The incentive to improve your own content is quietly working against your budget, which is backwards.
Flat pricing inverts that. Every question the assistant answers instead of you is pure upside, so writing the article that kills a recurring question is unambiguously worth doing.
What Intercom gives you that Answer HQ doesn't
Worth knowing before you spend a trial:
- A shared inbox with team inboxes, assignment and round robin routing.
- A workflow automation builder, SLAs, and multibrand support on higher plans.
- Channels: SMS, WhatsApp, phone, email campaigns, banners and tooltips. Answer HQ has none of these, no voice, no social DMs, and no mobile app.
- SSO, identity management and HIPAA support on Expert. Answer HQ makes no SOC 2 or HIPAA claim and offers no self-hosted deployment.
- Product tours and outbound messaging as a growth surface.
Answer HQ is deliberately narrower: a widget that answers questions from your content, a help center, and email handoff through Tickets.
How answers are grounded
Answer HQ builds a private Knowledge Vault from your crawled website and uploaded files, then answers from that content and nothing else. Retrieval is two-stage, vector search followed by a reranker.
Quick Citations sit on every answer, linking the page or document it came from. That matters more than it sounds: a customer can verify, and you get a pointer to the exact page to edit when an answer is wrong. Fixing content is the maintenance loop, not prompt tuning.
Re-import schedules are monthly on Basic, weekly on Pro, every three days on Growth, and page limits are 100, 500 and 1,500. Check those against the size of your docs on the pricing page before picking a plan.
Setup: minutes versus a project
One script tag on your site, or our Shopify app installed from the App Store with a theme app embed and no theme code editing. Shopify merchants get billed through Shopify's own plans page, so it lands on the Shopify invoice.
Capital City Motorcycle Club went from signup to live in five minutes. That's the shape of it: import site, publish widget, watch what customers ask.
Quick Questions let you seed the conversation with preset prompts you can drag to reorder. Pro and Growth get custom widget themes so it reads as part of your site.
Handoff is email, not an inbox
When the assistant can't answer, the customer fills in a contact form inside the conversation and it arrives in Tickets, which threads by email, on every plan.
There's no agent console, no queue, no live chat with a human, no CSAT product. For one or two people answering the leftovers this is fine and honestly simpler. For six agents collaborating on threads it isn't enough, and Intercom's inbox is the reason to pay for Intercom.
The reporting difference
Intercom reports on your team: volume, response times, workload. Useful when you have a team.
Insights, on Pro and Growth, reports on your content instead. Questions get grouped into Topics by meaning rather than keyword match, across languages including Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Knowledge gaps get ranked, which is the list of questions customers asked that your content didn't answer, and each gap has a guided flow that starts an article with the title, category and the customer's real questions pre-filled. Complaints and compliments come back summarized. Chats are analyzed on every plan, so the day you upgrade your history is already processed.
Autopilot, also Pro and Growth, lets you ask about your own support data in plain language and take dashboard actions, with your explicit approval required before anything risky like publishing an article or re-importing your site.
The Breather used exactly this loop to deflect over 1,200 tickets in their first 30 days and cut inbound volume nearly 40% across email and phone. Details in how The Breather deflects 1,200 support tickets.
Choose Intercom if
- Your support team works a shared inbox daily and needs routing and workflows.
- You need WhatsApp, SMS or phone as support channels.
- Outbound messaging, tours and campaigns are part of the same job.
Choose Answer HQ if
- Repeat questions your docs already answer are most of your volume.
- You want one predictable number on the invoice.
- You'd rather improve help content than tune automation rules.
FAQ
How much does Intercom cost with Fin?
As of August 29, 2026, seats are listed at $29, $85 and $132 a month for Essential, Advanced and Expert, with Fin from $0.99 per outcome and channels like SMS, WhatsApp and phone charged separately. Two seats on Advanced plus 500 Fin outcomes is around $665 a month. Verify on their pricing page.
Is Answer HQ cheaper than Intercom?
For most small businesses, yes, because there are no seats and no per-answer fee: $199 for 1,000 AI answers or $299 for 5,000, with two months free on yearly billing. If your volume is a handful of conversations a month, Intercom's entry seat is cheaper.
Can I keep Intercom and add Answer HQ?
You can, though there's no Intercom integration and I won't pretend there is. The widget is independent, so it can answer on your site while your Intercom inbox handles the rest. Connectors exist only for Zendesk, Shopify, Cal.com and Google Drive, and they're in beta on Pro and Growth.
Does Answer HQ do outbound messages or product tours?
No. It's a support answering layer, not a marketing automation tool. No proactive campaigns, no tours, no banners.
How do I test answer quality properly?
Take your fifteen most common questions, import your site, and ask all fifteen in the widget during the trial. Check the citation on each answer rather than the tone. ZURIGA did their own version of this against four competing tools and found Answer HQ significantly more accurate on four of five questions, on their own German content.
